Sometimes it’s about no more than the four points. Actually, it’s always about the four points.

Fans looking for another pyrotechnical display from the much-discussed Western Bulldogs outfit may have left Etihad Stadium a little underwhelmed on Saturday night.

But as midfielder Lachie Hunter told Sportsday Radio on Monday night, the 2016 Bulldogs are about far more than the ‘sexy' stuff.

“At some points it was an ugly game, we had some injuries, so rotations got hampered a lot which probably prevented us from kicking the score we wanted to, but defensively we were pretty good, keeping them to around 50 points again,” Hunter said.

“In that aspect it was pretty good, so we walk away happy.”

While the Bulldogs posted their third win in four games on the weekend, getting over the Blues to the tune of 36 points, the win was probably best described as a workman-like performance.

Though the Dogs' free-wheeling attacking style of play has been garnering all of the attention, it’s been the defensive side of the game that’s been the foundation for the fireworks.

The Bulldogs held Carlton to 49-points on the weekend, and have kept the opposition to an average of 54 points per contest in 2016.

If not for the 93 points posted by the Hawks in round three, that number would be an even more impressive 41.

Hunter said that while the win was obviously soured somewhat by the hamstring injury to Jason Johannisen, the Club needed to move on quickly.

“He’s had a really good start to the year and that was unfortunate what happened on the weekend but you can’t spend too much time worrying about it, as harsh as it sounds, someone’s just got to come in and take his spot.”
